Why are Egypt sustainable food systems a growing priority for investors and policymakers?

Egypt’s population is projected to reach 150 million by 2050, while its economy is forecast to expand by more than four times its current size. Feeding this growth sustainably — against a backdrop of water scarcity, soil deterioration from overgrazing and monoculture, and rising food insecurity — makes resilient food systems an urgent national imperative.

What role does AgTech play in building sustainable food systems in Egypt?

Precision agriculture is particularly significant given Egypt’s water scarcity challenges. By optimising irrigation, reducing dependence on synthetic inputs, and minimising pollution, AgTech solutions can improve yields and rural incomes simultaneously. Experts including former Egyptian Agricultural Research Centre professor Yasser Ahmed have highlighted hydroponics as a viable component of Egypt’s sustainable food system transition.

How is Egypt addressing water scarcity to support sustainable agricultural development?

Egypt has made considerable infrastructure investments to recycle and reuse water for agriculture. The Bahr El Baqar facility — the world’s largest wastewater treatment plant, opened in 2021 — processes 5.6 million cubic metres per day, enough to cultivate 140,000 hectares. The share of treated wastewater rose from 50% in 2015 to 68.7% by 2019.

What is Egypt’s government strategy for achieving sustainable food systems by 2030?

In 2009, Egypt introduced its Sustainable Agricultural Development Strategy Towards 2030, setting out a framework to modernise the sector. Key elements include land reclamation, irrigation system modernisation, and water recycling programmes. Agriculture contributes significantly to GDP and employs approximately 20% of the workforce, giving the strategy both economic and food security dimensions.

What are the main risks to Egypt’s sustainable food systems over the coming decades?

Climate change, land degradation, and water overuse represent significant structural threats. Unsustainable practices such as monoculture and overgrazing have already caused soil deterioration and water shortages. Meeting demands of a rapidly growing population while preserving natural resources will require coordinated investment across AgTech, infrastructure and policy reform to stabilise Egypt sustainable food systems long-term.
