What is the potential of big data for transforming food and agriculture systems?

Big data offers granular insight into rainfall patterns, water cycles, fertiliser requirements, and input use, enabling more profitable planting decisions and supply chain efficiencies. When integrated with IoT, AI, and cloud computing, it supports higher yields with fewer inputs — a combination that addresses both food security and sustainability objectives simultaneously.

What barriers are preventing wider adoption of big data in agriculture?

Adoption is constrained by a lack of farmer trust in data sharing, insufficient training, inadequate rural digital infrastructure, and unresolved questions around data ownership. A 2019 US study found that 62% of farmers did not use farm-level data software, and 70% of those who did felt their needs were not being met.

Why do farmers distrust sharing data with agribusiness and technology companies?

Farmers perceive that downstream organisations capture disproportionate financial value from farm-level data. In the US, more than half of farmers surveyed did not trust either government or private companies with their data. Concerns deepen where the same platforms providing big data tools also supply seeds, fertilisers, and equipment — creating potential conflicts of interest.

What infrastructure gaps must be addressed for big data to transform agriculture in developing regions?

Regions that stand to gain most from big data in food and agriculture — particularly across lower-income countries — frequently lack reliable mobile networks, internet connectivity, sensor infrastructure, and satellite communication systems. Without investment in this foundational layer, the analytical and productivity gains associated with big data cannot be realised at scale.

What must data providers do to accelerate the role of big data in transforming food and agriculture?

Providers must offer clear disclosure on what data is collected, for what purpose, and how it will be used — directly addressing the trust and transparency concerns that inhibit uptake. Resolving data ownership questions is also prerequisite to securing public funding, which remains essential for scaling big data adoption across the agricultural sector.
