What is the projected scale of aquaculture by 2030 and why does it matter for food security?

Aquaculture production is forecast to reach 109 million tonnes by 2030 — a third higher than current levels — and is predicted to supply the majority of aquatic protein in human diets by 2050. This trajectory positions aquaculture as a critical pillar of global food security as wild-capture fisheries face mounting pressure.

What are the main sustainability challenges facing the aquaculture sector?

Key concerns include habitat destruction, freshwater overuse, marine ingredient dependency in feeds, wild juvenile harvesting, genetic contamination from farm escapees and disease. Annual losses from aquaculture disease are estimated at $6 bn, with conditions such as sea lice, white spot syndrome virus, and tilapia lake virus posing growing threats to farmed and wild fish populations.

How is technology helping to build a more sustainable future for aquaculture?

Innovations range from genetics-backed breeding programmes — such as Xelect’s collaboration with Australis Aquaculture, which achieved a 12% improvement in feed conversion ratio — to alternative protein sources including insect meal, crop-based ingredients, and fish processing waste. Each approach reduces pressure on wild fisheries while improving the operational efficiency of farmed production.

What role can aquaponics play in making aquaculture more sustainable?

Aquaponic systems recycle water between fish and hydroponic crops, eliminating nitrates and phosphates while reducing fertiliser dependency. Biofloc systems operate with near-zero water exchange, offering value in arid regions. Investment is growing — French start-up Les Nouvelles Fermes raised €2 mn in 2021 to build one of Europe’s largest urban aquaponics facilities.

Where do the most significant investment opportunities in sustainable aquaculture lie?

The strongest opportunities are concentrated in technologies that address the sector’s core sustainability constraints: disease management, feed innovation, genetics and water-efficient production systems. As wild-capture fisheries decline and protein demand rises, investors who back scalable, sustainability-oriented aquaculture ventures are well-positioned to benefit from financial returns and growing institutional appetite for food security assets.
